How does MPESA work?
Once you have a mobile phone, and it has a sim card in it, then you will see MPESA services as one of the services that are available for use. Once the sim card has been inserted into the sim card slot, and you have deposited money in the card, then you can freely start making your transactions. You can now start sending money to your family members and friends, and paying for services conveniently.
Furthermore, Safaricom has a transaction brochure, that is both on the online platform and offline platform. This helps you to know the amount of money that will be deducted from your account when you are making any transaction. MPESA charges are different depending on the amount of money that you are either sending or withdrawing from your phone.
To start sending and receiving money, you first need to open an account with an MPESA agent as a customer. All you need to have is to provide your national identity card for registration. Once you have completed the registration process, then you will be asked to create a 4-digit pin. This is the pin that you will be using every time you want to make a transaction through MPESA. In addition to that, this pin also acts as a security measure in that in case anyone gets access to your phone in your absence, they will not be able to withdraw or send your money without putting in the 4-digit pin.
Are there any safety measures that have been put in place to secure MPESA transactions?
This is a very common question that different people have asked regarding MPESA. The first security measure that has been put in place is securing your account with a 4-digit pin that only you know of. In the event that you lose your phone, or your sim card, and you had money in your phone, then no one can have access to your funds unless you give them the pin.
Secondly, if any discrepancies are detected from your sim card, then Safaricom customer care will see to it that your money is safe. Even if you are the one who has lost your line, and you want a replacement of it, then there are certain questions that you will be asked to confirm your identity and to determine if the sim card is indeed yours. Apart from your official details, you will also be asked about your MPESA balance.
